Het langlopende onderzoeksproject van NP3 van mei tot november 2012

Van 17 september tot en met 27 november 1994 organiseerde het S.MA.K. in Gent de tentoonstelling This is the show and the show is many things. De tentoonstelling vond plaats in het Museum voor Schone Kunsten te Gent, aangezien het S.M.A.K. destijds niet over een eigen locatie beschikte.

Curator Bart de Baere nodigde, met als eerste bouwsteen van het proces de tekst 'Moods en Modes', 13 zowel 'opkomende' als ook bekende kunstenaars uit om deel te nemen. Naast de kunstenaars Mark Manders, Louise Bourgeois†, Jason Rhoades†, Henrietta Lehtonen, Eran Schaerf, Uri Tzaig, Claire Roudenko-Bertin, Luc Tuymans, Anne Decock, Suchan Kinoshita, Honoré d'O, Fabrice Hybert en Maria Roosen, werden ook critici en bezoekers onderdeel van het gehele proces. Gedurende twee maanden werd door de kunstenaars in diverse zalen van het museum intensief gewerkt, gediscussieerd en gepresenteerd. De gelijknamige catalogus maakte gedurende 'This is the show...' letterlijk en figuurlijk onderdeel uit van het artistieke proces; er was ruimte voor het moment, processen en ontwikkelingen.

Het concept dat Bart de Baere voor ogen had met deze opvallende tentoonstelling This is the show and the show is many things, was het omkeren van de 'gesloten' museummuren; hij stelde het museum open voor de ontwikkeling en presentaties van nieuwe artistieke stromen en processen. Bart de Baere lanceerde een concept dat de volgens hem vastgeroeste kaders en conventies van museale richtlijnen voor tentoonstellingen loswrikte. Hij haalde de kunstenaar, zijn atelier en het artistiek proces letterlijk het museum binnen en liet de tentoonstelling midden in het museum ontvouwen en groeien. De bezoeker had hierin ook een actieve rol en stond daardoor midden in het artistieke proces.

Hij maakte direct kennis met de kunstenaars en zag het werk ontstaan of transformeren, gestuurd door zijn eigen waarneming. De tentoonstelling kende nooit een officiële 'opening'; op 17 september 1994 werd de start van het project ingeluid, en was vanaf dat moment toegankelijk voor het publiek.

Enkel de pers werd door middel van een persbericht ingelicht over de start van deze tentoonstelling. Vanaf de eerste dag als ook weken en zelfs jaren daarna werd This is the show dan ook om haar vooral 'onconventionele' samenstelling en uitvoering veelvoudig beschreven, gecomplimenteerd en bekritiseerd in verschillende tijdschriften, bladen en kranten.

Dit project heeft veel stof op doen waaien in Kunstenland, is inspirerend geweest voor menig curator of kunstenaar en heeft in de kielzog mogelijk zelfs aangezet tot het initiëren van nieuwe, volgende projecten, tentoonstellingen en presentatievormen. Des te verrassender was het voor NP3, dat zij weinig concrete informatie terug kan vinden over het WAAROM, WAT en HOE van This is the show and the show is many things. Hierdoor krijgt This is the show meer en meer het karakter van de onbenaderbare, ongrijpbare kunstmythe. Voor elk gevonden antwoord komen veel meer vragen in de plaats; een uitgelezen kans, om een uitgebreid onderzoek aan deze bijzondere tentoonstelling te wijden.

Het onderzoeksproject Re:-X-to-the-Z-to-the-ibit [Re:-This is the situation and the situation is many things} is ontstaan vanuit de fascinatie van artistiek leider Ruud Akse, zowel vanuit zijn positie als curator, maar ook als kunstenaar. Deze fascinatie, kwam niet voort uit een bezoek aan deze uitzonderlijke tentoonstelling maar werd gevoed door de media en inspirerende ontmoetingen met o.a. curator Bart de Baere en Luc Tuymans, twee jaar na This is the show. De fascinatie voor het 'echte' proces en de 'werkelijke' betekenis in relatie tot de veranderende tijdsgeest nam steeds meer toe.

In het onderzoeksproject Re:-X staat niet het vooraf uitkristalliseren van de presentatie van de kunstenaar of een door de curator bestempeld, helder communicerende tentoonstellings- en belevingsomgeving voorop; maar de vraag hoe, met de kennis en de kunstwereld van nu, er teruggekeken wordt. Zowel vanuit het perspectief van de curator, kunstenaar, maar ook zeker van het publiek en andere betrokkenen. NP3 stelt de vraag naar de invloed van tijd op de betekenis van het artistieke fenomeen This is the show and the show is many things.

Net als het concept van Bart de Baere ligt de werkwijze van het langlopende onderzoeksproject Re:-X-to-the-Z-to-the-ibit [Re:-This is the situation and the situation is many things} vooral in de waarde van het procesmatige, het intuïtieve reageren en anticiperen van kunstenaars, curator, publiek en andere betrokkenen. Met als belangrijkste drijfveer om met het teruggrijpen en verdiepen in werkwijzen, producten en tentoonstellingen uit het verleden, in de context van tijd en ontwikkeling, nieuwe inzichten te krijgen en mogelijk vernieuwingen te ontdekken voor de kunst van NU.

In uiteenlopende (presentatie)vormen en verschillende sequenties maakt NP3 naast haar eigen ontdekkingen, analyses en interpretaties ook de inzichten, kennis en ervaringen van diverse, betrokken partijen inzichtelijk en toegankelijk voor derden.

In deze eerste sequentie toont NP3 de groeiende resultaten van haar vooronderzoek naar de tentoonstelling This is the show and the show is many things. Bij het vooronderzoek is NP3 ondersteund door studenten Kunsten, Cultuur en Media (KCM) van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

The performance and installation Demarcation; A Description by R. Brothers is centered around a wooden board which is divided into small sections of equal size. During the performance, a variety of colored wooden pieces is placed on and around the board. The actions of the performers, who place and move the pieces on the board, create unexpected mechanical sounds. This way a composition of colors, lines and sound is obtained. After the performance, the board and its environment are left as a static installation.

The performance can be seen as a strategic game, of which the rules remain obscure to the audience. This obscurity gives the audience the freedom to discover their own correlations in the actions and choices the performers have made. Because of the abstract forms and rules of play, associations with topics such as city planning, battlefields or statistics are brought to mind. Furthermore the installation is adapting, abstracting and ridiculing various codes of sports and games, while transforming the white cube into an abstract gaming arena. Besides the board, the installation includes an umpire chair, strange game equipments, colored gym floor lines, sports uniforms with a logo of an aardvark (our mascot) and a real (stuffed) aardvark.

The origin of the wooden game board derives from a copper engraving of a city plan. This plan was designed by religious maniac Richard Brothers to illustrate his radical visions for his book A Description of Jerusalem (1801). Fragments of his remarkable biography can be found in various media (i.e. wall text, video) throughout the installation.

In the middle of the night the performance is broadcasted on the Romanian television. Two men in sport uniforms are placing colored wooden pieces on and around a board. Beautiful moves, complex footwork, and an analysis of a crucial moment in the game are captured in this summary. The men are playing on a board that derives from a copper engraving of a city plan, designed by religious maniac Richard Brothers. During the broadcast the biography of Richard Brothers, told from a first person point of view, scrolls across the bottom of the screen. The broadcasting closes with an outline of others results and the standings in the Demarcation league.
